What is Past tense?

What is past tense?  


The past = that happened before now.

You could say that the past tense is used to say anything that happened before now, yesterday, or a long time ago.

What are the types of past tense?

The past tense has four variations, these are:

1. Past Indefinite

2. Past Continuous

3. Past Perfect

4. Past Perfect Continuous

1. Past Indefinite 

Any act that occurred in the past comes under this type.

Format: Sub+v2+ obj

Examples:

He played the guitar.

They finished the work.

She did a good job.

Rishav studied hard.


2. Past Continuous 

This type is used when some action was going on in the past.

Format: Sub+was/were+ v+ing+ obj

Examples:

They were playing football.

He was fighting well.

Samuel was reading a book.

The girl was dancing.

3. Past Perfect 

When two actions happened in the past and to express the first action the Past Perfect tense is used.


Format: Sub+had+v3+obj


Examples:

The bus had left before I reached.

The class had finished before they arrived.


4. Past Perfect Continuous 

When an action was in continuous process before some point in the past, we use this type to express that action.

Format: Sub+ had been+ verb+ing+ obj

Example: She had been working when I came.

The children had been playing when their mothers arrived.
