One of my subscriber asked me this question. The answer is simple but the reason behind it was funny, at least to me.
It is because of non-rhoticity. This is why the car is pronounced as "caa" and butter is pronounced as "butta".
It started happening back in 1700s in London. People started relaxing their tongue and started avoiding the pronouncing the "r". And gradually it became the style.
But they do pronounce the letter 'r' if is at the beginning of a word like 'red' and the phrase like "car engine".
So, next time if someone wonders about this question make sure to tell him that it is called non-rhoticity and it is historical.
